By definition, it is a form of writing using lines and symbols that look like writing, but does not have any meaning. It is writing "left to the reader to interpret, almost like the way in which one would deduce meaning from abstract art" according to the Cambridge Dictionary.
In my practice as an Art Psychotherapist, I often used this writing practice with my clients. I told them to place their pen or pencil on the paper and write whatever is on their mind. Do not pick up your writing implement, just continue to write without judgement of how it looked. The messier the better. It could become a type of code that no one else could read. The steady flow of self expression was cathartic, if you could get past the imperfection of the writing.
Recently, as I started my day of sewing, my mind was swirling with war images and thoughts of grief and anger. It was evident I needed to discharge some of the grief and anger before I made pretty things. My professional training provides me with knowledge of many creative outlets to express myself. Asemic writing on my jeans seemed appropriate on this day. I've always drawn and painted on my clothing. It's a bit rebellious. This time, however, I chose to write on the upcycled bag I was going to make. I chose to do my writing in a circle. Circular formats are calming.
I challenge you to try out this form of self expression. Add it to your visual journaling practice, add it to your jeans or denim jacket. Chalk it on your driveway if you want. Its healthy, we need to purge the stress following two years of a pandemic, our nation split apart by politics and now watching a war play out moment by moment before our eyes.
I leave you with some images of asemic writing, including my denim clutch.
Be Well,
Janice
